DFL Rep. Hilstrom plans to run for Minn. secretary of state

A longtime Democratic legislator says she's moving ahead with a campaign for Minnesota secretary of state.

Rep. Debra Hilstrom of Brooklyn Center tells The Associated Press she will file campaign fundraising paperwork Friday.

She will be competing for the office being vacated by Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie following his second term.

Hilstrom says she will run only with Democratic endorsement and drop out if someone else gets it at next year's party convention. So far, only one other Democrat, Rachel Larson Bohman, has announced a campaign, but several others are considering it.

A few Republicans are also looking at running to be the state's election chief.

Hilstrom has served in the Legislature for 14 years. She says she wants to pursue policies that limit corporate influence in elections.
