Man sentenced in mobility scooter death
GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) -- A Hibbing man has been ordered to serve a year in jail for the traffic death of a 78-year-old man who was riding his mobility scooter in northern Minnesota.
Seventy-one-year-old Lyle White was sentenced Monday to more than four years in prison. But the judge stayed the sentence and placed White on supervised probation for 10 years as part of a plea deal.
In addition to the jail time, White will have to pay a fine of nearly $1,100, undergo a chemical dependency evaluation and not use or possess drugs or alcohol.
White earlier pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide.
According to the complaint, White drove his pickup over a hill on Sept. 29 and collided with Eugene Paul Zeroth of Princeton, who was riding his scooter on the road.
