Rybak to officiate weddings of 40 same-sex couples Aug. 1

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak will officiate 40 same-sex weddings consecutively starting at midnight on Aug. 1, the moment such unions become legal in Minnesota.

The first couple Rybak will preside over will be Margaret Miles and Cathy ten Broeke. The two had a commitment ceremony twelve years ago, but ten Broeke brims with emotion at the thought of getting married.

"It is hard to express what it feels like -- what it feels like to now know that our beloved Minnesota recognizes our commitment," ten Broeke said. "And yesterday, yesterday was like walking outside into the bright light of love and justice."

Because of Wednesday's Supreme Court ruling invalidating the Defense of Marriage Act, both Minnesota and the federal government will recognize ten Broeke's marriage.
