Car plunges into Mississippi; driver dead

Authorities in Minneapolis are investigating a crash in the city's historic Mill District that left a man dead.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said a Pontiac Sunfire drove off of West River Parkway, crashed through a security fence near the Stone Arch Bridge and went into the Mississippi River below.

The incident happened just before 10 p.m. Deputies located the car about 40 feet from shore using a remote controlled device. Divers went to the car and found a dead man inside.

It wasn't clear what killed the man, why the car ended up in the river or if anyone else had been inside. Authorities didn't publicly identify the victim, either.

The Sheriff's office is investigating the incident.
