Report: No punishments yet from Mpls. police brutality charges

None of the complaints against Minneapolis police officers filed under the city's new civilian review system have resulted in punishment from the police chief, a city report released Friday shows.

More than 300 cases have been filed with the city's new Office of Police Conduct Review since October of 2012. In many cases, the alleged offenses were considered minor and resulted in the officers receiving what the department calls "coaching." More serious allegations, such as use of excessive force, were more likely to be investigated than dismissed, the city said.

The panel, made up of police officers and civilians, forwarded 17 recommendations to Chief Janee Harteau. The report says Harteau, who was sworn into office after the new system was implemented, couldn't issue discipline in most cases because the allegations were too old. Two cases, however, are still pending.

The City Council's public safety committee will discuss the report next week.
