Cargill cites safety concerns in closing Lake Erie salt mine

Cargill is halting its salt mining operations deep under Lake Erie in Ohio for safety reasons.

Cargill stopped mining there on Monday out of concern about possible structural damage in the mine which is 1,800 feet below ground, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

The Twin Cities-based company continues to ship salt but is not mining any new salt at that location. Cargill's other U.S. salt mines are in southern Louisiana and Lansing, N.Y.
