Teen sentenced in East Side St. Paul beating

A juvenile court judge has sentenced a 15-year-old boy for the near-fatal beating of a St. Paul man last August.

Ray Widstrand, who was 26 at the time of the attack, suffered severe head trauma after he was assaulted. Widstrand tried to pass a street fight police say involved dozens of young people on St. Paul's East Side.

Ramsey Juvenile Court Judge Mark Ireland Tuesday sentenced the unnamed teen to an eight-and-a-half-year adult sentence, which was stayed. He also received 18 to 24 months in a juvenile detention facility and will be under enhanced supervision until he turns 21.

The Ramsey County Attorney's office says the sentence was the result of a plea agreement.

Isaac Maiden, 19, faces first-degree assault and charges that he committed the crime to benefit a gang. His trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 4.

Cindarion Butler, 16, has been certified to stand trial as an adult. He was charged with two counts of criminal activity to benefit a gang and two assault charges.

Two other teens also face assault and gang charges.
