Mayo Clinic cutting 82 jobs in SE Minn.

The Mayo Clinic Health System is laying off 82 employees at seven facilities across southeastern Minnesota.

The layoffs are all in the health system's transcription services and will affect employees in Albert Lea, Austin, Cannon Falls, Faribault, Lake City, Owatonna and Red Wing, Mayo said.

The health system plans to transition its transcription services to Amphion Medical Solutions, a Madison, Wis.-based company that specializes in medical record transcription and coding. Amphion already provides a portion of Mayo's transcription services.

Mayo declined substantial comment but said in a statement that "new technologies are constantly being developed that will ultimately reduce the demand for transcription services."

Amphion plans to talk with the laid off Mayo employees about potential job opportunities, a Mayo spokeswoman added. The layoffs are effective March 31.
