Nature center protests hunting in Minn. forest

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Part of the Wilder Forest in May Township is slated to eventually open to the public, but some neighbors aren't happy it could allow hunting and trapping.

The Wilder Foundation expects to sell 279 acres along the northeastern shore of Terrapin Lake by the end of the year.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports (http://bit.ly/1ep2Ept ) the land would eventually be conveyed to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Nearby is the 700-acre Lee and Rose Warner Nature Center, which draws thousands of children each year.

Greg McNeely, a trustee of the Manitou Fund, which owns the center land, says he doesn't feel it's a good fit to have a wildlife management area near the kids.

The DNR's Cynthia Osmundson says the department is considering restrictions on hunting.
