Man dies in St. Paul house fire

One man is dead after an early morning house fire in St. Paul.

Firefighters were called to a burning single story home at 752 N. Lexington Avenue around 5a.m.

Eight family members who were alerted by smoke detectors escaped the fire without injury.

St. Paul fire marshal Steve Zaccard said a family friend sleeping in the basement couldn't escape the blaze. "There was only one way for him to get out, which was obviously blocked by the fire, or he would have escaped," Zaccard said. "He had no suitable secondary way out. There was a small window but it's not suitable for escape."

Zaccard said the cause of the fire is being investigated. The man's identity hasn't been released.
