The Minnesota Department of Education is expanding its statewide effort to support struggling schools.
Last year, the state Department of Education opened Centers of Excellence in St. Cloud, Thief River Falls and Rochester.
The centers are staffed by educational specialists who work with schools on ways to close the achievement gap, improve student test scores and boost graduation rates.
State education officials say that system is helping struggling schools make progress. So now they're adding three more centers in Marshall, Fergus Falls and Mountain Iron.
The expansion will be funded by $2 million in new education funding passed by lawmakers last spring.
