School discipline policy aims to do more than punish

School officials in Minneapolis are considering a change in discipline policy intended to restore disruptive students to their classroom and peers. The proposed policy is part of the district's response to a suspension rate that is much higher for black and Indian students than for other ethnic groups.

The Star Tribune quotes Michael Thomas, an associate superintendent, as saying the idea is to help "problem-solve instead of just punish, punish, punish."

The Daily Circuit speaks with teachers union President Lynn Nordgren about the proposed policy.
