More than 60 wolves killed as NE Minn. hunt ends

The wolf hunting and trapping season will close today in northeastern Minnesota.

Hunters have until a half hour after sunset and trappers until 10 p.m. So far, those in the Arrowhead region have killed 66 wolves, one more than the target harvest for that part of the state.

The season continues in the northwest and east central wolf zones until Jan. 31, or until the quota for each region is met.

The overall harvest target for the state's second-annual registered wolf hunt is 220 animals. As of Wednesday afternoon, hunters across Minnesota have killed 177 wolves.

That's far fewer than last year, when 413 wolves were killed. The state Department of Natural Resources cut the quota nearly in half this year after a winter population survey showed the wolf population in the state had dropped between 2008 and 2013.
