Crookston mayor holds best snowman contest to get people outside

Hoping to get people out of their houses and into the snow, Crookston Mayor David Genereux is holding a best snowman contest.

City residents can win $200 for the best snowman or snow sculpture built before the end of the year.

"I just wanted to get kids out of the house during the Christmas break," Genereux said. "Instead of playing Nintendo or whatever games they play, get outside and have some fun."

With the cold December weather, the mayor said he's seen few snowmen around town. "Sometimes we get into this negative mood, 'oh it's too cold, can't even go outside," he added. "They can bundle up, build a snowman, do a snow fort of something, just have fun with it."

Crookston residents need to email the mayor photos of their snow creations to enter. Prizes will be awarded Jan. 2. Genereux and a city council member put up the prize money.

Warmer weather Friday provides a perfect opportunity for children and adults to go outside and build something, the mayor added.
