Northwest Minnesota wolf season closes
Wolf hunters in Minnesota have reached the overall target the Department of Natural Resources set for the year.
Hunters have killed 223 wolves this year, just over the target of 220, DNR officials say.
Most of the wolves killed this year were in northwestern Minnesota. Hunting and trapping there ends today.
A target of 10 for the late season hasn't been met yet for east-central Minnesota, so hunters and trappers can continue pursuing wolves in that region until Jan. 3 or until the target is met.
The overall quota for this year was cut nearly in half from the state's inaugural hunt last year after a winter survey showed the wolf population had dropped between 2008 and 2013.
Last year hunters killed 413 wolves.
