Buddy Holly's last recordings

Fifty-five years ago this week, Buddy Holly left his home in New York City and headed to Milwaukee to begin a concert tour billed as the Winter Dance Party.

Holly would die in a plane crash during that tour. After his death, a tape was found in his apartment in New York that included 13 songs Holly had recorded by himself just before leaving for the tour. It was the last music he ever put on tape.

Some of the songs were released commercially after a full band was added to the mix. Click the audio player above for one of those tracks, and check out this NPR story from 2003 for more.
