Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall looks to cut $3 million

Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall is the latest four-year public school in the state to face a budget deficit.

The school is looking at more than $3 million in budget cutbacks starting in the 2015 school year. School administration is consulting with teachers and others at the university about where to cut, faculty association member Rick Herder said.

"They're looking at everything from academics to athletics to indirect expenses," Herder said.

"I'm looking right now at a page of programs that they have considered discontinuing or reducing," he added. "It includes more than a dozen programs here that could be discontinued or reduced."

Other Minnesota schools dealing with budget deficits include Minnesota State University-Moorhead, Winona State, and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Enrollment shortfalls are a common problem at all the schools.
