SD House nixes measure to allow guns in Capitol
The South Dakota House has killed a bill to allow people with conceal carry permits to bring guns into the capitol.
The bill has failed to move on to the Senate by a 33-34 vote. It needed 36 votes to pass.
A slim majority of the House passed an amendment to the bill in question that would have allowed guns in the Capitol except when the legislature is in session, when the Supreme Court meets, and during the governor's budget address.
Critics argue that the amendment defeated the main intent of the bill. The bill's sponsor says she hoped it would have allowed gun owners and legislators protection during session.
A similar measure failed to pass the House about two weeks ago.
