Light rail trains shuttling between St. Paul and Minneapolis will be a much more common sight starting Monday when about 100 operators of the soon-to-be-launched Green Line will conduct test trains as frequently as every 10 minutes.

The trial runs are intended to familiarize the operators with the route and stations, and they may happen anytime and any day of the week. In April, Metro Transit will phase into its regular-service schedule to prepare for the June 14 opening. 


Metro Transit is encouraging the public to stay off the tracks, look for oncoming trains, and cross only at intersections and crosswalks. 


Trains will typically run no faster than 35 miles per hour, with slower speeds in downtown St. Paul and through the University of Minnesota. 


The Green Line is the second light-rail line to begin service in the Twin Cities, following the Blue Line between downtown Minneapolis and the airport and Mall of America.
