Latest round of wintry precipitation brings travel troubles

Another round of winter precipitation is causing travel troubles.

Nearly 1,600 flights have been canceled today and about 1,500 others delayed, according to flight tracking site FlightAware.com. The bulk of the problems are in Dallas, Chicago and Newark, N.J. More than 1,100 flights have already been canceled for tomorrow.

The culprits this time range from freezing rain to sleet to snow. And, of course, cold.

Nebraska is shivering through highs in the single digits with wind chills 20 to 35 degrees below zero.

Parts of Indiana have been hit with 9 inches of snow, while freezing rain and sleet moved across Kentucky and parts of Ohio. A suspension bridge over the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Kentucky was closed because of ice covering its hard-to-treat metal grid deck.

The eastern West Virginia panhandle is bracing for up to a foot of snow and forecasters say the Washington, D.C., area could see a layer of ice and 8 to 12 inches of snow.
