Travel between St. Paul and points north will be more of a challenge than usual this weekend.

MnDOT plans to close the north- and southbound lanes of I-35E between I-94 in downtown St. Paul (Exit 107) and Highway 36 in Little Canada (Exit 111) beginning Friday at 10 p.m.

The closure will last until 5 a.m. Monday, March 10. Traffic will be diverted to I-94 on the south end of the closure and I-694 on its northern end.

The construction comes on the same weekend as the state's high school hockey championship at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul through Saturday. Weather forecasts for the weekend suggest a rush of cool air on Saturday — between 10 and 26 degrees — and another mild spell — likely in the 40-degree range — on Sunday and Monday, according to MPR News meteorologist Paul Huttner.

While the highway is closed, MnDOT crews will remove the Arlington Ave. and Wheelock Parkway bridges that span the road. Both bridges will close to traffic around 5 p.m. Friday. MnDOT anticipates they will remain closed until May.

The construction is part of MnDOT's ongoing MnPASS project. Drivers will encounter overnight lane closures on that same stretch of highway from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m., Mondays through Fridays, beginning Monday, March 10.
