Minn. cities, counties question printing mandate

Local governments are pushing back on a Minnesota law that requires school districts and other public offices to publish details of upcoming meetings in local newspapers.

A St. Cloud Times report says most cities and counties already communicate with residents through websites and social media. Officials say it doesn't make sense to waste tax dollars on newspaper notices.

League of Minnesota Cities lobbyist Ann Lindstrom says more people seek information online than in newspapers.

A bill authored by two St. Cloud lawmakers would allow cities, counties and districts to publish notices online. One lawmaker, Republican state Sen. John Pederson, says the move would save local governments within his district $100,000 a year.

The newspaper industry opposes the bill, saying the money is well-spent because the notices keep residents informed.
