Bemidji man in custody after 10-mile police chase

Authorities in northwestern Minnesota say a suspect is in custody following a 10-mile chase Friday evening that involved a stolen squad car.

Bruce Gordon with the Department of Public Safety said Becker County sheriff's deputies used spike strips to stop a vehicle they believed had been connected to a liquor store theft in Detroit Lakes.

But Gordon said that was not the end of the chase.

"According to the preliminary investigation, the suspect exited the vehicle with a shotgun and was able to commandeer a squad car. The deputies were taking cover behind another squad car and did fire on the suspect," Gordon said.

He said deputies deployed spike strips again, and were able to stop the stolen squad car. No officers were injured.

The suspect -- a 23-year-old Bemidji man -- was treated for minor injuries and is jailed on a firearms charge. Additional charges are pending.
