Sen. Heitkamp proposes changes to ACA

There are just four days left for Americans to buy health insurance for 2014 as required by the Affordable Care Act.

The law is still unpopular. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, only 38 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the law. Republicans have tried for months to repeal the law and Democrats have been reluctant to defend it as technology problems frustrated early users of the state and federal exchange websites.

Until this week, lawmakers have proposed very few actual changes to the law. A group of six U.S. senators is now trying to get support for a package of tweaks to the law. The five Democrats and one Independent outlined their proposals in an op-ed article in Politico Magazine yesterday.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with one of them, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, a Democrat from North Dakota, about the proposals.
