Republicans meet to choose candidate for 1st Congressional seat

Republicans in southern Minnesota meet on Saturday to choose a candidate to challenge incument DFL U.S. Rep. Tim Walz.

Three Republicans are seeking the party's endorsement to battle Walz for the 1st Congressional seat.

The candidates are State Rep. Mike Benson of Rochester, Army veteran Aaron Miller of Byron, and businessman Jim Hagedorn of Blue Earth.

The candidates are running on a platform of smaller government and less regulation. All three say they'll abide by the GOP endorsement and not run a primary campaign if they fail to win the endorsement.

The winner will face Walz in the November election. Walz is serving his fourth term in Congress. The 1st congressional district extends across southern Minnesota and includes Rochester, Worthington, Mankato and Owatonna.
