Heroin addicts face barriers to treatment

In this Monday, March 17, 2014 photograph, Patty DiRenzo looks online at her home in Blackwood, N.J., for people seeking help for drug addiction. DiRenzo, whose son, Salvatore Marchese, overdosed on heroin in 2010, says that she looks everyday for people that might need her advice. DiRenzo spent years trying to get help for her son, but was denied for many reasons. She was constantly told she didn't meet the "criteria" for treatment centers. She even got turned away from emergency rooms because doctors say alcohol withdrawal is life threatening, but heroin withdrawal is not.
