U of M hires Stollings as women's basketball coach

Minnesota has hired Marlene Stollings from Virginia Commonwealth University as the replacement for women's basketball coach Pam Borton.

The university announced the decision on Monday and scheduled an introductory news conference for Tuesday.

Stollings has four seasons as a head coach on her resume, the last two at VCU. After the Rams went 11-19 her first year, they improved to 22-10 with a spot in the WNIT. Stollings guided a turnaround at Winthrop in 2011-12, too, when the Eagles posted their second winning season in the past 26 years of the program. She was the interim head coach at New Mexico State in 2002-03.

The 1998 graduate of Ohio University has also been an assistant at Mississippi, Saint Louis, Wright State, New Mexico State and Jacksonville.
