Road work begins along University Avenue in St. Paul

Road work at 11 intersections along University Avenue in St. Paul begins this week as part of the Central Corridor light-rail project.

Workers will replace faulty concrete that has begun to crack prematurely. General contractor Walsh Construction has agreed to pay for the work, which will cause some lane restrictions and traffic delays, said The Metropolitan Council's Dan Soler.

The project is requiring the general contractor to replace the concrete panels rather than going with an easier fix, Soler said.

"While crack filling it would be a lot less impactful to the public, it doesn't provide the length of time of the intersection we expect on brand new pavement," he said.

The work will continue over the next five weeks and won't affect the June 14 opening of the Green Line connecting St. Paul to Minneapolis, Soler said.
