Man hospitalized after run over by Metro Transit bus

A man is hospitalized after being run over by a Metro Transit bus late Tuesday.

Authorities say the accident occurred before 8 p.m. Tuesday, as a route 17 bus leaving the Uptown Transit Center on Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis reported a passenger running for the bus fell under its rear wheels and was run over.

Rescuers found the man still under the back of the bus, conscious and breathing when they arrived.

Emergency personnel transported the man by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center. It wasn't clear what injuries he'd suffered or his condition.

Transit officials said the driver is undergoing routine drug and alcohol tests.

MetroTransit cautions riders not to try and pursue moving buses or trains, and runs a "Be Safe Don't Chase" campaign, urging patrons to wait for another bus rather than risk injury.
