Trout, salmon deaths linked to invasives
Researchers have found that subtle immune system changes caused by eating an invasive fish could explain the deaths of some Great Lakes trout and salmon.
Death from deficiency of thiamine, or Vitamin B1, has been an obstacle to restoring lake trout and stocking of chinook and coho salmon. The new report links their ingestion of the invasive fish alewife — which carries an enzyme that destroys thiamine — to the immune disorders. We talk with the report's chief author.
