Gun incidents, violent crime up in Minneapolis

A new report by the City of Minneapolis shows a more than 8 percent increase in gun-related incidents in the city between 2012 and 2013.

The report defines gun-related incidents as reports of people shot at, wounded by gunfire, guns being fired or used in some other form of crime. In 2012 there were 1,330 such reports, the city said. In 2013 that number increased to 1,442.

The report also shows a 15 percent increase in the number of people who suffered major or minor gunshot wounds, up to 218 for 2013 compared to 189 in 2012.

The number of reported violent crimes such as rape, robbery and homicide, ticked upward slightly between 2012 and 2013, but has been steadily decreasing since 2006.

Since 2010, the number of reported cell phone thefts has increased by over 600 percent, from 186 in 2010 to 1,418 in 2013.

Editor's note: Minneapolis Police said Wednesday afternoon there were 1,330 gun incidents in 2012, not the 1,025 the city reported earlier. That works out to an 8 percent increase in gun-related incidents from 2012 to 2013, not a 40 percent increase as the city data this morning indicated.
