The state acquired about 3,000 acres of rustic land in 2008 and is in the early stages of turning it into a camping and recreation destination in far northeastern Minnesota.

Erika Rivers took over Tuesday as director of the state Department of Natural Resources parks and trails division.

Minnesota boasts 76 state parks and recreation areas, along with state forest campgrounds and thousands of miles of trails, so Rivers is one of the more public officials for the DNR.

Rivers previously was a DNR assistant commissioner and helped oversee the creation of Minnesota's newest state park, Lake Vermilion State Park.

Rivers joins The Daily Circuit to talk about her vision for Minnesota parks and trails. She also takes listener questions.
