Kline's charter school bill passes House

A bill to promote charter schools authored by 2nd District Republican U.S. Rep. John Kline sailed through the U.S. House Friday with widespread support from both sides of the aisle.

The legislation provides $300 million in annual grants for charter schools and Kline says it encourages the sharing of effective ideas among school systems.

"We must support charter schools as a valuable alternative to failing public schools and work together to encourage their growth," Kline said.

It's not clear whether the Senate will take up the bill. Lawmakers there had been hoping to rewrite the No Child Left Behind education law and include a section on charter schools in it. But differences between the House and Senate and Republicans and Democrats will likely prevent action on that bill this year.
