Man who jumped into Mississippi River charged

A man who jumped into the Mississippi River as part of a social media stunt last week was charged Monday with disorderly conduct in Hennepin County.

Joseph Mark Sanislo, 19, was filmed last week jumping off the 610 West River Bridge in Brooklyn Park as part of the "Cold Water Challenge," an online campaign that originally was intended to raise money for charity.

Alarmed bystanders called 911. Fire, police and state law enforcement officers responded, along with specialized diving and marine units.

Hennepin County authorities urged people not to participate in the stunts.

"First responders routinely put their lives on the line to rescue people from cold water and other hazardous locations," Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said in a statement. "We don't want first responders to be put into harm's way needlessly. These situations are entirely preventable."

Charges have not yet been filed against the person who filmed Sanislo jumping.

The cold water challenge has been linked to injuries across the country. A 16-year-old boy drowned Friday after jumping into Eagle Lake in Carver County for what his friends said was an attempt at the challenge.
