Third mishap as Green Line test train, car collide

For the third time in as many weeks, a vehicle has struck one of the new Green Line trains between St. Paul and Minneapolis.

A car hit the side of a Green Line test train at the intersection of Eustis Street and University Avenue, Metro Transit said Friday. The eastbound car made a left turn directly into the side of a moving train.

No one was injured and both the train and the car were able to leave the scene. The crash briefly stopped train testing along the line

"Metro Transit police caught up with the auto driver and have cited him for an improper U-turn, as well as no proof of insurance and they continue to investigate," agency spokesman John Siqveland said.

Police have stepped up enforcement along the Green Line. The trains are traveling through a route that has much more traffic than along the Blue Line and authorities say motorists and pedestrians will have to exercise added caution as service is set to begin on June 14.

Disclosure: Minnesota Public Radio and the Metropolitan Council are negotiating ways to reduce noise and vibrations from the newly built light rail line outside MPR headquarters under a contract agreed to in 2009.
