Cass Lake man charged in crash that killed 2

A Cass Lake man is due in court this month on charges that he caused a drunken head-on collision that killed two people.

A Brainerd Dispatch report says 27-year-old Michael James Stangel is charged with eight counts of criminal vehicular homicide. A judge on Friday set bail at $500,000 with conditions or $750,000 without conditions.

Two people died in a collision in Cass County late in the evening of May 3. A witness told investigators Stangel hit his car twice from behind and then sped past him.

Prosecutors say Stangel slammed head-on in another vehicle, killing two Cass Lake residents. The criminal complaint says Stangel's blood-alcohol content was 0.33 percent, four times the legal limit.

Online court records on Sunday didn't list a defense attorney for Stangel.
