Mpls. to pay $38K overtime suit settlement

The City of Minneapolis will pay $38,125 to settle a lawsuit from a former civil rights investigator.

Seema Desai, who spent two years investigating employment discrimination cases on behalf of the city's Civil Rights Department, claimed the city violated her rights as an employee.

Desai's lawsuit alleged she was required to work overtime but wasn't allowed to put it on her time card. When she complained about that, she said she was disciplined. She quit her job last summer and filed the lawsuit.

In legal filings, the city of Minneapolis said Desai's claims were without merit. The city denies it asked Desai to work overtime without pay. To the contrary, it says supervisors repeatedly told Desai not to work more than 40 hours per week and encouraged her to take time off later in the week if she worked a long day.

Desai and another former employee testified publicly against Civil Rights Director Velma Korbel when she was up for re-appointment this year. But a divided city council confirmed Korbel for a second term.
