Injured black bear killed in West St. Paul

Police in West St. Paul say they've killed an injured black bear that may have been the same bear that had been recently spotted in Savage, Eagan and other southern Twin Cities suburbs.

The bear was spotted in a residential area of West St. Paul early Saturday. Police Chief Manila Shaver says efforts to contain it in hopes of tranquilizing it were unsuccessful. He says a possible injury to the bear's hind foot was aggravating it. And he says residents were starting to get up for the day and coming out to check on the commotion.

Shaver says officers feared that the bear would flee to an even more populated area, so they shot the bear.

It may be the same bear that Police in Savage shot in late May.
