Schools questioning free speech for students in social media
A former Rogers High School student is suing the Elk River School District.
In January, Reid Sagehorn replied "Actually, yeah" to a public tweet asking if he had made out with a 28-year-old teacher. Sagehorn says the comment was sarcastic and there was no relationship. But the district suspended him for nearly two months. Sagehorn now contends his civil rights were violated, and his reputation was permanently damaged.
The case raises questions about how we define free speech for students in the digital age.
Cathy Wurzer spoke with Richfield-based attorney Aimee Bissonette, who has advised schools across the country on their social media policies.
