Rescue efforts fail to pull man from Mississippi

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office searched the Mississippi River for a man who is believed to have drowned after efforts to rescue him from the water failed Tuesday morning.

Witnesses reported around 10:37 a.m. Tuesday seeing a man in the river, north of the Hennepin Avenue Bridge, according to a news release from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. Emergency responders came to the scene and tried to throw a rope with a flotation device toward the man, without success. They saw him go under the water and had yet to find him, as of Tuesday evening.

The Minneapolis Police Department, Minneapolis Fire Department and a State Patrol helicopter responded to the scene.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Water Patrol Unit deployed boats for a search and recovery operation, and will continue the effort, according to a Tuesday evening news release. The sheriff's office is investigating the incident.
