President of the St. Paul teachers union Mary Cathryn Ricker has been elected to a top leadership position with the American Federation of Teachers.

Ricker replaces Francine Lawrence, who is retiring this year.

Before becoming president of the Saint Paul union in 2005, Ricker was a middle school English teacher.
