The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings for the Twin Cities, and temperatures will climb into the 90s across much of Minnesota today.

The weather agency says humidity will make it feel more like 100 to 110 degrees. That's led to an excessive heat warning for seven Twin Cities counties, including Anoka, Washington, Dakota, Ramsey, Hennepin, Scott and Carver counties.

The heat index may also top 100 degrees in Brainerd, Alexandria, St. Cloud, Fargo Moorhead, Willmar, Redwood Falls, Marshall, Mankato and Windom today.

A heat advisory stretches from Grand Rapids to Fargo, down to Sioux Falls and over to Rochester.

The weather service also says there is risk of severe thunderstorms across almost the entire state late this afternoon tonight.

The highest risk will be in central Minnesota, west of Alexandria, Brainerd and Bemidji, through Grand Forks and all the way to Bismarck, North Dakota. Damaging wind will be the main threat, although large hail and very heavy rainfall are also possible.
