Authorities investigate baby death in Butterfield

Watonwan County authorities say they're investigating the death of a newborn and that a 14-year-old girl has been hospitalized.

The sheriff's office said Sunday that it got a call at 5:45 p.m. Friday about an unresponsive newborn in the southern Minnesota city of Butterfield.

The Watonwan County medical examiner pronounced the girl dead at the scene. The body was taken to the Ramsey County medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

The 14-year-old girl was taken from the duplex apartment to a hospital in St. James, then transferred to a hospital in Mankato.

Chief Deputy Jeremy Nachreiner says investigators are still trying to determine if the girl is the mother and what happened at the home, but it's been complicated by a language barrier. He says her condition is not life-threatening.
