Minnesota's winter can be a challenge for many crops, but not for garlic. Every August, Minnesotans celebrate the hearty crop with its own festival in Hutchinson.

Mary Jane Miller, "Chef Wrangler" and "Master of Mmmm...." for the Minnesota Garlic Festival, joined MPR News' Tom Crann to talk about what makes the festival unique.

A couple other festivals happening this weekend:

• Pipestone is recreating history this weekend at Civil War Days. This Saturday means war for the city, when it transforms into a civil war-era camp where they recreate both famous battles and daily life.

• Brainerd Lakes area is celebrating the chokecherry this weekend, a fruit that's so sour it apparently sucks the saliva out of your mouth. There are many activities including a pit-spitting contest.
