Winona police investigate American flag burnings

Authorities in southeast Minnesota are looking for a person of interest in a string of American flag burnings in the Winona area.

The flags have been hanging on poles, attached to homes, when they've been set on fire. Seventeen flags have been burned since July 29 and officials are concerned that a burning flag could set the house on fire.

That hasn't happened, but police in Winona and Goodview are worried enough they want help identifying a man caught on surveillance tape near a house with a burned flag.

Some flags have been completely burned while others have been found with burn holes, said Goodview Police Chief Kent Russell.

"Until we get some sort of word from somebody or can talk to the individuals who have been doing this, we're not going to know any motive," he added.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Winona or Goodview police departments.
