Blind, deaf Norwegian biker heads home after South Dakota crash

A deaf and blind Norwegian man is preparing to return home after being struck by a car in Sioux Falls while attempting to bike from South Dakota to Nebraska.

The Argus Leader reports 71-year-old Harald Vik has been hospitalized since he and an interpreter on a tandem bicycle were hit Aug. 22. Vik has traveled by bike through 50 countries and participated in the New York City Marathon 20 times.

Interpreter Robert Skarsbakk says Vik will travel by ambulance to the Minneapolis airport before returning to Norway, where Vik is an advocate for the disabled. He was born deaf and began losing his eyesight at age 10.
