Gun found in child care center crib

The state Department of Human Services is scrutinizing a St. Paul child care center where police found a gun in a crib.

Police found the weapon Friday while executing a search warrant at a house north of downtown St. Paul that doubles as a child care center, according to an incident report. Police have not said whether the gun was loaded.

They did not say if any children were present at the time.

Police arrested three people, including the license holder of the day care. The 37-year-old woman, who was later released, has not yet been charged.

According to the Department of Human Services website, the child care center has an active license that was renewed in May.

A spokesman for Ramsey County said staff reviewing records on the daycare found a complaint related to a 2006 case alleging malicious punishment of a child. That case was dismissed and the county took no licensing action against the daycare at that time.

Ramsey County communications director John Siqveland said in an email the county requested a temporary suspension of the day care operator's license on Monday, to go into effect immediately. The state granted the request this afternoon, Siqveland said.
