Public comment period for St. Paul school start times ends Sunday

The St. Paul district is taking public comments on its website through Sunday on whether to push back school start times for older students from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The move would require younger students start school earlier.

District officials cite research that shows high school students do better in school if they start class later.

Ryan Vernosh, the district's policy and strategic planning administrator, said so far comments on the proposal have been evenly split between those who want a later start and those who don't.

"There are others who say that we need to slow down a little bit and look at some other alternative scenarios in order to decrease the number of elementary schools that would potentially be starting at 7:30," Vernosh said.

The school board is expected to make a decision next month on whether to shift start times. If approved the changes would go into effect next fall.
