SUV hits, kills woman in Minneapolis bus shelter

A sport utility vehicle speeding across a McDonalds parking lot struck and killed a woman sitting in a bus shelter in north Minneapolis Monday night.

Police said the SUV was backing up in the parking lot of the restaurant at 45th Avenue and Lyndale Avenue north just after 5 p.m. Witnesses told investigators that the vehicle suddenly accelerated, still in reverse, and raced across the parking lot. The SUV hit another vehicle, a cement garbage container and then crashed through a bus shelter on the boulevard, hitting two people inside the shelter.

The crash killed the woman in the shelter. A man there with her fled, but was later found and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Police detained the SUV's driver, a woman, and her adult male passenger. Investigators don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved, but are still investigating what caused the crash.
