What happens when an author's book is banned?

The Rochester School District recently considered banning Minnesota author Louise Erdrich's book "The Painted Drum." A parent sought to have the book removed from a Mayo High School English class because of the sexual content.

While the board ultimately denied the request, the book banning continues. A few weeks ago a California district banned "Fault in Our Stars" by John Green.
